We've got a special ‪#‎OTD‬ and ‪#‎TBT‬ post for you this week! On February 18, 1987 the "Milwaukee School" time capsule - originally sealed in 1893 - was opened by the staff and students at Milwaukie Junior High School (now the Portland Waldorf School). The featured photo is a colorized view of the Junior High from the 1940s - although today's view from Harrison Street doesn't look too different! Check out the comments below for a list of the time capsule's contents. ‪#‎MilwaukieTBT‬ ‪#‎HistoricMilwaukie‬ ‪#‎MilwaukieJrHigh‬ ‪#‎TimeCapsule‬ ‪#‎HarrisonStreet‬ Photo Credit: the "Milwaukie, Oregon" photo book published by the First State Bank, circa 1940, located in the archives of the ‪#‎MilwaukieHistoricalSociety‬ - visit them on Facebook here: http://ow.ly/UioOe ‪#‎OregonHeritage‬ COMMENT: The original 1893 “Milwaukee School” (with the “-ee” spelling) time capsule was placed in the cornerstone of the school building that sat where City Hall is today. In 1937 the time capsule was opened while being moved to the cornerstone of the new Junior High building, where it was again sealed. In 1987, in celebration of the building’s 50th anniversary, the time capsule was opened and it was discovered that much of its contents had suffered heavy water damage. Many items were salvaged by the Milwaukie Historical Society, but many items had to be discarded. Some of the original 1893 artifacts included late 19th century money (one- five- ten- cent pieces, a half-dime, and coins from Spain, Canada, England, and Mexico), a metal from the “First People’s Party Convention”, business cards, reports from the “Third Convention Protestant Episcopal Church” and Milwaukie schools, photos of the old gymnasium and Seth Lewelling, a copy of the Declaration of Independence, newspapers, and stamps issued at the original Milwaukie Post Office.
