"Henneman's Strawberry Fields" circa 1890s - This week's ‪#‎TBT‬ dates back to the end of the 19th century and features the Henneman (or Hennemann) family who were literally "out-standing" in their field. In the early days, ‪#‎Milwaukie‬ was well known as a horticultural center of activity thanks in large part to the Lewelling family and others who imported and created all kinds of plants and fruits. The Henneman Farm, one of the first commercial berry fields in the area, was situated on 11 acres south of Washington Street along 27th Avenue - and included the land where Milwaukie Elementary School sits today. Phillip Jacob "PJ" Henneman, was born in Nassau, Germany, in 1840 and arrived in the United States around 1866. After years of roaming around the Midwest, PJ returned to Germany to marry Elizabeth Frederick. In 1882 they moved to Milwaukie and began to cultivate the land along Spring Creek into a well-known fruit growing and shipping enterprise. Pictured in this colorized photo is PJ (second from left wearing a hat), his 3 sons and 2 daughters, and others standing in the field. ‪#‎MilwaukieTBT‬ ‪#‎HistoricMilwaukie‬ ‪#‎HennemanFarm‬ ‪#‎Strawberries‬ ‪#‎WashingtonStreet‬ ‪#‎27thAvenue‬ ‪#‎MilwaukieElementary‬ ‪#‎horticulture‬ ‪#‎fruitgrowers‬ ‪#‎farmers‬ ‪#‎EatAStrawberry‬!
